What female strength means to me

Although I've had many identity crises in my short 19 years, one thing I've always been so certain about is how much I love being a woman. I am so proud to be a woman. When I was a child I always got so angry when boys my age would call girls 'weak' and 'stupid'. It didn't make sense in my brain because to me, woman were the strongest people I knew.

I think this is probably down to the two women who raised me - my mum and my nana. I grew up around women who held their own and were so strong, so that I never once doubted my worth because of my gender. I would always stand up for myself against anyone who ever called me weak, and was actually quite a feisty 6 year old.

My concept of female strength is constantly evolving the older I get, and I think what I've recently realised is that strength can encompass so many qualities that aren't just physical. To me a strong woman is someone who is comfortable with her softness, but is sharp when needs be. A strong woman doesn't let anyone else define her worth. A strong women knows that other's beauty does not undermine her own. A strong woman support other women. A strong woman accepts her flaws and embraces her individuality.

I am a strong women because I'm at peace with being vulnerable. I am a strong women because I stand my ground. I am a strong women because of the strong women I'm surrounded by. We are amazing creatures, and don't let anyone ever tell you any differently.

'The Divine Feminine' - Editor's Letter

The Divine Feminine

So this is officially the first issue of Starry Eyed! I wasn't sure what to do for my first theme, but for a recent uni project I created a publication called 'Soft Pink Matter', in which I was exploring the meaning of 'feminine strength' and all the different ways to define it. Through this project I had restored my faith in feminism and how important it is to support women, in a world where it is almost shamed to be a feminist because of all the negative connotations that come along with that word.

For my first issue I wanted to further explore the female experience in all it's glory, including the not too great parts. I want this blog to be honest and open-minded; a place where people aren't afraid to express how they feel through art and words.

The theme of this issue is 'The Divine Feminine', which can encompass several different topics within itself. The issue will probably last 2 months, so there is always time to email me ( if you have anything you'd like to submit!

For what you can expect from this issue, think anything from the topic of abortion to the best playlist for feeling empowered. This website can be anything you want it to be, it's your chance to share what your passionate about as well as reading articles yourself! We are using this theme to celebrate women and how incredible we all are, no matter what age, sexuality, race, religion etc.

I can't wait to show you what I have in store for the next couple months, and I hope we can build this little community into a fun and informative outlet!!

Much love,

Orlagh xx

Starry Eyed

I often wonder what's out there
The things hope to see,
The people I'm yet to meet
and the places I've never been.

I've often been called a dreamer
or even starry eyed
'The one who asks too much from the world'
I'm never satisfied.

I look at the world through an optimist's eye
and allow my spirit to be guided by my heart
To appreciate the present, to wander over
love, laughter, poetry, art

What is it that keeps you up at night?
When does your heart feel most full?
Is it the prospect of reaching the moon
or the content of gazing up at the stars?

This was a little poem I wrote when I was in the process of creating this blog - Starry Eyed. I think it perfectly sums up what this website is about. It's for the people who want to use the universe to their full potential, to live life as passionately and vividly as possible. It's for people who want to express themselves, to share a little bit of themselves with the world. It's a place to escape, a place free of judgement and hate, a place full of love and art. I am so excited for the launch of this website and I can't wait to show you all the amazing submissions and articles I have lined up! This as been in the making for so long and it feels so amazing to finally have it out in the open for people to enjoy, and I hope that anyone who goes on this site can take something positive about it and continue their day feeling happy. I appreciate the support I've been given already so much, and I love that this is creating a little online community! If you'd like to keep up with Starry Eyed on social media, follow @starryeyedcollective on instagram for updates and other cool content, and email if there's anything you would like to submit!

Much love,
Orlagh xx
